When I was 18 years old, I drove to the gun & tackle store to buy pepper spray. After the purchase, I carried the pepper spray around with me for five years. From time to time, I thought about throwing it out because I had kept it for so long, but a voice said, “Don’t do it.”
Working in the healthcare field, I often came home late at night. Still, thankfully, I never had to use it. Nevertheless, I kept the pepper spray, doing as I was told by the inside voice.
One year later, I was driving in the city when I noticed some girls in a big classic car following me. Since I wasn’t exactly sure of their motives or if they were really even pursuing me, before I parked my car, I reached for my pepper spray. As I swung open the door, three menacing women were racing toward me. Before I could land a foot on the ground, one of them shoved the door on my leg, forcing me to remain inside my car.
Lo and behold, the moment every woman—every human being—dreads was upon me! It was the moment I would have to figure out how to protect myself, the moment I would have to use my 6-year-old pepper spray, not knowing if it would flow like the grace of God or turn out to be as dry and useless as dust.
It turns out that having pepper spray that night prevented a struggle or violence that could have left me with more than just a bruised leg. Those horrible women ran in three different directions away from me. They scattered . . . screaming, hollering, rubbing their eyes, and coughing. They didn’t know what hit ‘em! Having never been a bully or one who likes to fight, I can’t express how glad and grateful I was that night to have that big container of pepper spray with the paint peeling off of it.
After experiencing a horror like that, as you can imagine, with so much mischief, lawlessness, and violence in the world, I feel everyone—especially women—should have some means of personal protection. That’s because I, like everyone else, refused to believe I would ever be attacked or have to defend myself or even have to resort to using pepper spray on anyone. Therefore, as you can also imagine—out of respect for human life—no, I’m not a fan of guns. However, your safety and well-being is more than important. It’s everything. So being proactive is crucial.
